Thaimacu Lodge - Zigzag Heron Zigzag Heron
Pará State Pará State

Located in the southwest of Para state, Thaimacu lodge will undoubtedly, soon become one of THE most sought after birding and wildlife destinations in all of Brazil, not just southern Amazonia.

The Thaimacu area is vast primeval and well protected forest encompassing a remarkable diversity of habitats, including Terre Firme, Varzea, and important blocks of bamboo, as well as, surprisingly Cerrado. Consequently, the bird list is already around 540 species after just a few visits.

The lodge itself is superb with delicious food. The chalets are immaculate, very comfortable and provide immediate access to a wonder-world of birds, stunning scenery and clouds of butterflies.

The entire meg-fauna is seemingly intact; Tapirs during the daytime, fresh Jaguar and Puma tracks, daily, along the myriad of trails, and primates such as White-whiskered Spider Monkey, Red-bellied Titi Monkey, Snethlage’s Marmoset, Red-nosed Bearded Saki and Feline Night Monkey.

Boat trips along the Rio Sao Benedito and the adjoining Rio Azul are undoubtedly among the very best anywhere in the world. Hoatzins are common along the rivers and there are chances to see Razor-billed Curassow, Zig-Zag and Agami Heron. Harpy Eagle, Sungrebe, Hoatzin, Scaled Pigeon, Sunbittern, Crimson Topaz, Bald Parrot, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Spangled and Pompadour Cotinga and many others bird species. Giant Otters compete for attention with enormous Black Caiman.

This truly is a paradise. The commitment of the lodge owner to long-term conservation, and real protection of the Thaimacu area, together with several other likeminded land-owners, plus the fact that it borders a vast protected area of several million hectares, ensures the long term viability of this magical birding destination.

A purpose built forty meter tower allows you to witness just how vast and untouched this area actually is. It is also a wonderful platform for photographing confiding Bald Parrots and Curl-crested Aracaris amongst many other species. The options are seemingly endless.

Night excursions often prove very productive with great chances of seeing Black-banded and Crested Owl, Austral Screech-Owl, Short-tailed Nighthawk, Pauraque, Common and Great Potoo.

This is now THE place to immerse yourself in Southern Amazonia and soak up the quite simply astonishing diversity of wildlife that graces this very beautiful part of our planet.
