Itinerary

Mato Grosso State Mato Grosso State

Participants for this tour will need to arrive in Cuiabá city, Mato Grosso do Sul sate, one day before the start of the tour to ensure an early start on Day 1.

Day 1 (Oct. 7) - Early breakfast and check out of the hotel in Cuiabá city. Transfer by car to the Pantanal, the largest wetland on earth. On the way to Porto Jofre Hotel, located at the end of the Transpantaneira road, we will have plenty of opportunities to see an incredible array of birds, including Greater Rhea, Buff-necked and Plumbeous Ibis, Black-collared Hawk, Jabiru Stork, Red-legged Seriema, Sunbittern, Hyacinth Macaw, Toco Toucan, Gray-crested Cachalote, Yellow-billed Cardinals, as well as mammals such as Giant Anteater, Capybara and Marsh Deer. After lunch, we will continue the drive to our lodge with opportunities to see Southern Screamer, Long-winged Harrier, Gray-breasted and Ash-throated Crake, Little Cuckoo, Nacunda Nighthawk, White-wedged Piculet, Rusty-backed Antwren, Barred Antshrike, Cinereous-breasted Spinetail, White-banded Mockingbird, Subtropical Doradito, White-bellied Seedeater, Chestnut-bellied Seed-Finch and Scarlet-headed Blackbird. Check in at Porto Jofre hotel at the end of the day. Dinner and checklist.

Day 2 and 3 (Oct. 8 to 9) - After an early breakfast, we will take a boat and navigate the river systems searching for jaguar that come to the river banks in search of food, water, or just a cool breeze. There will often be great photo opportunities. Other mammals possible during the boat rides include Giant Otter, Capybara, Black Howler Monkey, Black-striped Tufted Capuchin and Brazilian Tapir. We return to the lodge for lunch and a short break. In the early afternoon, we recommence our adventure on the river looking for these incredible mammals. Dinner and checklist.

Day 4 (Oct. 10) - Early breakfast and check out of the hotel. Transfer by car to the Rio Claro lodge, located by the Transpantaneira road. During the morning we will look for birds and mammals that we have not seen on previous days. As soon as we check in at the lodge, we will have a meal and a short break. The areas around the lodge, offers a different variety of habits and birds. Target birds will be Ground-Dove, Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Yellow-collared Macaw, Nanday Parakeet, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Crimson-crested and Pale-crested Woodpecker, Great-rufous Woodcreeper, Red-billed Scythebill, Mato Grosso Antbird, Barred Antshrike, Greater Thornbird, Thrush-like Wren, Dull-capped Attila, Stripe-necked Tody-tyrant, Helmeted Manakin, Flavescent Warbler, Rusty-collared Seedeater, Red-crested Finch, Gray-headed Tanager, Variable Oriole, Orange-backed Troupial. At night we will search for Tropical Screech-Owl, Great Horned Owl, Common and Great Potoo, while also keeping an eye out for mammals such as Ocelot, Tapir, Crab-eating Fox and Southern Tamandua. Dinner and checklist.

Day 5 (Oct. 11) - Early breakfast and check out of the hotel. Transfer by car to the Piuval lodge, located at the beginning of the Transpantaneira road. During the trip we will look for birds and mammals that we have not seen on previous days. As soon as we check in at the lodge, we will start birding. The areas around the lodge, offers a different variety of habits and birds. Target birds will be Undulated Tinamou, Least Bittern, Yellow-breasted Crake, Cinnamon-throated and Buff-bellied Hermit, Gilded Hummingbird, White-fronted Woodpecker, Collared Forest-Falcon, Black-bellied Antwren, Plain Antvireo, Planalto Slaty-Antshrike, Streaked Xenops, Black-crowned Tityra, Green-backed and White-winged Becard, Yellow-olive Flycatcher, Plain Tyrannulet, Southern Scrub-Flycatcher, Moustached Wren, Saffron-billed Sparrow, Golden-crowned Warbler, Hooded Tanager, Black-backed Grosbeak and Purple-throated Euphonia. At night we will spotlight to search for Mottled and Black-banded Owl, Rufous Nightjar and Little Nightjar. Dinner and checklist.

Day 6 (Oct. 12) - Early breakfast and birding around Piuval lodge until lunch time, looking for birds that we have not seen previously. Check out of the hotel and transfer by car for the three hour drive to Chapada dos Guimarães city. After check in at the Cambará Lodge we will start our visit to the Cerrado, the Brazilian Savanna. Target birds for the afternoon will be Small-billed Tinamou, Red-legged Seriema, White-vented Violetear, White-eared Puffbird, Checkered Woodpecker, Rufous-winged Antshrike, Sooty-fronted Spinetail, Plain-crested Elaenia, Chapada Flycatcher, Curl-crested Jay, Black-throated Saltator, White-rumped and White-lined Tanager and Plumbeous Seedeater. Dinner and checklist.

Day 7 (Oct. 13) - Early breakfast and birding around Chapada dos Guimarães city. We will start the morning looking for Horned Sungem, Blue-tufted Starthroat, Band-tailed and Fiery-capped Manakin, Orange-breasted Falcon, Blue-winged and Red-shouldered Macaw, Blue-winged Parrotlet, Pheasant Cuckoo, Planalto Slaty-Antshrike, Pale-breasted Spinetail, Southern Antpipit, Rufous-sided Pygmy-Tyrant, Lesser Elaenia, Crested Black-Tyrant, Gray Monjita, Pectoral Sparrow, Buff-throated Saltator, Black-faced Tanager, Blue Finch, Yellow-bellied Seedeater and Coal-crested Finch. After lunch target birds will include, Planalto Hermit, Yellowish Pipit, Southern Scrub-Flycatcher, Suiriri Flycatcher, Yellow-faced Parrot, Collared Crescentchest, Giant Snipe and any species we may have missed earlier. Dinner and checklist.

Day 8 (Oct. 14) - Early breakfast and birding around Chapada dos Guimarães city. On our last day, we will bird until 9:00am looking for Brown Jacamar, Guira Tanager, Scaled Pigeon, Spot-backed Puffbird, Swallow-winged Puffbird.. We check out of the hotel and transfer to Cuiabá city where we will have lunch, before catching our flight to São Paulo city. End of the trip.
