Located 65 km northeast of Cuiaba, Chapada dos Guimaraes is a unique destination in the Cerrado, the Brazilian Savanna, as it is located in a transition zone between the Cerrado and the Amazon, giving the visitor, not only the chance to see the Cerrado’s highlights such as Small-billed Tinamou, Red-legged Seriema, Scaled Dove, Horned Sungem, Blue-tufted Starthroat, White-eared Puffbird, Rusty-backed and Large-billed Antwren, Rufous-winged Antshrike, Band-tailed and Fiery-capped Manakin, Curl-crested Jay, White-rumped Tanager, but also birds that are not likely to be found elsewhere in the Cerrado such as the Brown Jacamar, the Blue-headed Parrot, the Yellow-tufted Woodpecker, Pheasant Cuckoo and many others.
Its peculiar landscape allows the visitor to move from open grass fields to exuberant forests within minutes, offering a drastic change in habitat as well as bird species.
From the grass fields where the rare Rufous-sided Pigmy-tyrant and the beautiful Yellow-billed Blue-finches wander through the brush, and the recently split Chapada Flycatchers make their lovely displays, to the sandstone cliffs where Red-and-green Macaws find an unusual nesting site, and the forested valleys where Manakins put on a daily show.
Chapada is certainly one of the most remarkable destinations in the Brazilian savanna.
