Amazonas State Amazonas State

Participants for this tour will need to arrive in Manaus one day before the start of the tour to ensure an early start on Day 1. Guests will be met at Manaus airport and transported to the hotel.

Day 1 (Sep. 15) - After breakfast, we will visit a canopy tower, located in Manaus Botanic Garden. The tower is stable and easy to climb. It offers birders the possibility of seeing Marail Guan, Double-toothed Kite, Black-faced and Tiny Hawk, Harpy Eagle, Ruddy and Plumbeous Pigeon, Black-bellied Cuckoo, Long-tailed Hermit, Black-eared Fairy, Yellow-billed and Paradise Jacamar, Guianan Puffbird, Black-spotted Barbet, Guianan Toucanet, Green Aracari, White-throated and Channel-billed Toucan, Waved Woodpecker, Lined Forest-Falcon, Orange-breasted Falcon, Caica and Red-lored Parrot, Spot-backed Amazonas State Antwren, Fasciated Antshrike, Lineated Woodcreeper, Glossy-backed Becard, Pompadour and Spangled Cotinga, Yellow-margined Flycatcher, Painted Tody-Flycatcher, Guianan Tyrannulet, Yellow-throated Flycatcher, Slaty-capped Shrike-Vireo, Buff-cheeked Greenlet, Purple and Red-legged Honeycreeper. As well as this impressive bird list, we will have a chance to see Dotted, Spotted, Blue-backed and Paradise Tanager. After lunch, we will visit a number of trails outside Manaus looking for Violaceous Trogon, Great Jacamar, Golden-collared Woodpecker, Dusky and Red-fan Parrot, Sapphire-rumped Parrotlet, Mouse-colored Antshrike, Ferruginous-backed and Hellmayr's Antbird, Spotted Antpitta, Tiny Tyrant-Manakin, Pink-throated Becard, Purple-breasted Cotinga, Double-banded Pygmy-Tyrant, Crimson Fruitcrow, Plumbeous and Golden-bellied Euphonia and Chestnut-bellied Seedeater. Dinner and checklist.

Day 2 (Sep. 16) - Early breakfast and check out of the hotel. We will drive for about an hour to bird the trail near Manacapuru city. Target birds this morning are Slate-colored and Black-faced Hawk, Sunbittern, Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Rufous-breasted and Great-billed Hermit, White-necked and Chestnut-capped Puffbird, White-fronted Nunbird, Gilded Barbet, Ivory-billed Aracari, Lafresnaye's Piculet, Scaly-breasted and Red-stained Woodpecker, Maroon-tailed Parakeet, Mealy Parrot, Spot-winged Antshrike, Reddish-winged Bare-eye, White-plumed, Bicolored and Yellow-browed Antbird, Peruvian Warbling-Antbird, Zimmer's and Duida Woodcreeper, Golden-headed and Blue-crowned Manakin, Masked Tityra, Screaming Piha, Spangled Cotinga, Wing-barred Piprites, Brownish Twistwing, Spotted Tody-Flycatcher, Coraya Wren, White-shouldered and Gray-headed Tanager, Rothschild's Blue Grosbeak, Rufous-bellied and White-vented Euphonia. After lunch, we will check into the lodge at Novo Airão city. Towards the end of the day we will target White-chested Puffbird, Paradise Jacamar, Northern Ocellated Woodcreeper, Black-faced Antbird, There are good opportunities here for night birding and we will look for Black-banded Owl, White-winged and Rufous Potoo. Dinner and checklist.

Day 3 (Sep. 17) - After breakfast, we will take a boat at Novo Airão city and cross the Rio Negro River. Our destination will be the Anavilhanas National Park, with more than 400 islands. This is the perfect place to look for birds such as Streak-throated Hermit, Blue-crowned Trogon, Ringed and Cream-colored Woodpecker, Festive Parrot, Black-crested and Blackish-gray Antshrike, Leaden and Klages's Antwren, Black-chinned and Ash-breasted Antbird, Zimmer's and Long-billed Woodcreeper, Speckled Spinetail, Wire-tailed Manakin, Varzea Schiffornis, Snethlage's and White-eyed Tody-Tyrant, Amazonian Tyrannulet, Cinnamon Attila, Amazonian Black-Tyrant, Amazonian Umbrellabird, Gray-chested Greenlet, Yellow-rumped Cacique, Turquoise Tanager, Red-capped Cardinal and Yellow-bellied Dacnis. Before, we return to Novo Airão for lunch, we will stop for an unforgettable experience to see the Pink Dolphins feeding. After lunch we will walk the trails around Novo Airão looking for some very special birds such as White-chested Puffbird, Cinereous and Spot-winged Antshrike, Gray Antwren, Yellow-browed and Bicolored Antbird, Collared Gnatwren, Napo and Northern Ocellated Woodcreeper, Chestnut-belted Gnateater, Rufous-tailed Xenops, White-crowned and Dwarf Tyrant-Manakin, Wing-barred Piprites, White-crested Spadebill, Yellow-browed Tody-Flycatcher, Slender-footed Tyrannulet, Forest Elaenia and Yellow-crowned Tyrannulet. Opportunities are good for night birding and we will look for Black-banded Owl, White-winged and Rufous Potoo. Dinner and checklist.

Day 4 (Sep. 18) - Early breakfast and check out of the hotel before a two hour drive to the small city of Iranduba. The open areas at the varzea hold some very interesting species, such as Horned Screamer, Least Bittern, Capped Heron, Roseate Spoonbill, Osprey, Black-collared Hawk, Snail Kite, Purple and Azure Gallinule, Short-tailed Parrot, Tui Parakeet, Black-and-white Antbird, Lesser Hornero, Red-and-white Spinetail, Cinereous Becard, Lesser Wagtail-Tyrant, Black-backed Water-Tyrant, White-headed Marsh Tyrant, Lesson's and Wing-barred Seedeater and Chestnut-bellied Seed-Finch. After lunch, we check in at our hotel in Manaus. This afternoon we will be spent walking the trails outside Manaus looking for birds that we have not seen during the trip. Dinner and checklist.

Day 5 (Sep. 19) - After breakfast, we will visit the canopy tower again, looking for birds that we may have missed on our first visit. After lunch, we will check out of our hotel and drive one hour to Presidente Figueiredo city .Target birds for the afternoon will be Variable Chachalaca, Bronzy Jacamar, Spotted Puffbird, Black Nunbird, Red-fan Parrot, Sapphire-rumped Parrotlet, Dusky-throated Antshrike, Guianan Warbling-Antbird, Point-tailed Palmcreeper, Chestnut-rumped Woodcreeper, Yellow-crowned and Saffron-crested Tyrant-Manakin, Dusky Purpletuft, Pelzeln's Tody-Tyrant, Rufous-tailed Flatbill, Yellow-throated Flycatcher and if the weather is kind, we will enjoy fabulous views of the Guianan Cock-of-the-rock. Opportunities are good for night birding and we will look for Crested and Spectacled Owl, Tawny-bellied Screech-Owl, White-winged and Rufous Potoo, Short-tailed Nighthawk, Rufous and Blackish Nightjar. Day 6 (Sep. 20) - Early breakfast and birding all day on the trails around Presidente Figueiredo. Today we will look for species that we have not seen previously. Target birds will be Marail Guan, Gray-winged Trumpeter, Straight-billed Hermit, Gray-breasted Sabrewing, Crimson Topaz, Yellow-billed Jacamar, Black-spotted Barbet, Guianan Toucanet, Brown-bellied Antwren, Black Manakin, Crimson Fruitcrow, Capuchinbird, Guianan Red-Cotinga, Wing-banded Wren, Collared Gnatwren, Moriche Oriole, Blue-backed Tanager, Fulvous Shrike-Tanager, Orange-fronted Yellow-Finch, White-naped and Chestnut-bellied Seedeater. Opportunities are good for night birding and we will look for Crested and Spectacled Owl, Tawny-bellied Screech-Owl, White-winged and Rufous Potoo, Short-tailed Nighthawk, Rufous and Blackish Nightjar. Dinner and checklist.

Day 7 (Sep. 21) - Early breakfast and check out of the hotel. We will drive around an hour to go birding at Balbina village. There is a fantastic patch of forest around this area where we will look for Great Tinamou, Harpy Eagle, Ornate Hawk-Eagle, Crimson Topaz, Collared Puffbird, Red-necked Woodpecker, Red-throated Caracara, Painted Parakeet, Sapphire-rumped Parrotlet, Black-headed Parrot, Rufous-bellied and Long-winged Antwren, Northern Slaty-Antshrike, Spot-winged and Hellmayr's Antbird, Thrush-like Antpitta, Plain-brown and Wedge-billed Woodcreeper, Curve-billed Scythebill, Buff-throated and Rufous-rumped Foliage-gleaner, White-fronted and White-throated Manakin, Guianan Red-Cotinga, Double-banded and Helmeted Pygmy-Tyrant, Pale-bellied Mourner, Musician Wren, White-breasted Wood-Wren, Collared Gnatwren, Guianan Gnatcatcher, Black-billed Thrush, Red-breasted Blackbird, Amazonian Grayish Saltator, Short-billed Honeycreeper and the rare Large-billed Seed-Finch. At the end of the day, we will transfer to Manaus (2hr drive) and check into our hotel. Dinner and checklist.

Day 8 (Sep. 22) - After breakfast, we will take a boat from Manaus and cross the Solimões River. Our destination this morning is Careiro da Várzea city. Depending of the weather conditions, we may spend a large part of the day birding around this small town. Target birds here are Slender-billed Kite, Hoatzin, Little Cuckoo, Spot-tailed and Ladder-tailed Nightjar, Blue-crowned Trogon, American Pygmy Kingfisher, White-chinned Jacamar, Chestnut-capped Puffbird, Golden-collared Toucanet, Curl-crested Aracari, Bar-breasted Piculet, White-throated and Spot-breasted Woodpecker, Short-tailed Parrot, Leaden Antwren, Glossy Antshrike, Humaita and Black Antbird, Striped Woodcreeper, Red-billed Scythebill, Lesser Hornero, Red-and-white Spinetail, White-bellied and Parker's Spinetail, Orange-fronted Plushcrown, Crimson-hooded and Red-headed Manakin, Bare-necked Fruitcrow, Lesser Wagtail-Tyrant, River Tyrannulet, Dull-capped Attila, Riverside Tyrant, Lemon-chested Greenlet, Scaly-breasted Wren, Oriole Blackbird and Yellow-hooded, Pearly-breasted and Bicolored Conebill. At the end of the day we will drive to Careiro city. Dinner and checklist.

Day 9 (Sep. 23) - Early breakfast and birding all day on the trails around Careiro city. Target birds will be Fiery Topaz, Needle-billed Hermit, Amazonian Trogon, White-chinned and Blue-cheeked Jacamar, Chestnut-capped and Rufous-necked Puffbird, Golden-collared Toucanet, Brown-mandibled Aracari, Spot-throated Woodpecker, Short-tailed Parrot, Madeira Stipple-throated Antwren, Humaita Antbird, Black Antbird, Peruvian Warbling-Antbird, White-throated Antbird and Hairy-crested Antbird, Elegant and Juruá Woodcreeper, Chestnut-winged Hookbill, Plain-crowned Spinetail, Red-headed and Blue-crowned Manakin, Yellow-browed Tody-Flycatcher, Short-tailed Pygmy-Tyrant, Citron-bellied Attila, Rufous-tailed Flatbill, Scaly-breasted Wren, Green Oropendola and Masked. Dinner and checklist.

Day 10 (Sep. 24) - This is the last day of the tour, but we should still have time to look for any species around Careiro or Manaus that we may not have caught up with so far. We will take the participants to the Manaus International airport according to the flight schedules of the group, where our tour ends.
